Fortune Cookies

Brent and I love fortune cookies. But for some reason Brent always gets the funniest fortunes. Back when we were just married, we had gone out for dinner with our family and everyone had gotten some great fortune promising each wealth, fame, happiness, etc. Then Brent opened his fortune which read: "The laughter of children is a joy to behold." Most fortunes tell you that you will be successful in life or that you possess some great character trait. I still laugh thinking about his reaction to what he considered such a cheesy fortune.

Having now had three children, this fortune has a whole new significance for me. In fact I was reminded of this story as I wrote the previous entry. Brent and I didn't realize then that this fortune did predict wealth and happiness far beyond anything we could imagine. I've always thought that fortune was so goofy, as far as a fortune cookie is concerned. But now I think it's one of the most accurate fortunes we've come across. Along with one other one. Before Brent and I got married, my mom took my sister, Brent and me to a Chinese buffet. After dinner we each grabbed for a cookie, and then read our fortunes aloud. Finally Brent read his which said, "You and your wife will be happy in your life together." We all marveled that he had grabbed the one cookie that specifically mentioned a "wife." Surrounded by three women, it was definitely meant for him.

We have had a happy life together and there is no greater joy than seeing our children laughing together. Who knows, maybe we will travel to a distant land, attain great riches, have a pleasant surprise, and hear great news soon! :)

I love the pictures of Sarah. She's gotten so big since we saw her last. And I love your thoughts about fortune cookies and kids. Very tender.

You write such thought provoking things so beautifully and descriptively.
